Val di Chio: nature, sport, and beauty in the Castiglion Fiorentino area Stories

castiglion fiorentino Ar

Duke Leopold of Lorraine called this area the "Valley of God" and there is nothing more to say. Here is the Valle di Chio, the green heart of Castiglion Fiorentino. A treasure trove of nature and relaxation trails, the countryside here envelops anyone who ventures into its

narrow streets in a warm embrace, ideal for walking or biking. The Val di Chio is one of the most beautiful places in the province of Arezzo, an enchanted location and an invitation to breathe clean air and enjoy unspoiled greenery.

It is a scenic, historical, and naturalistic jewel for which tourists, especially foreigners, 'lose their heads,' so much so that they buy houses here and choose Val di Chio as their 'buen retiro' whenever they can reach Italy.

The hills that form the ridge of the Val di Chio describe a portion of an ellipse and are ideal "terrain" for hiking; a bit harder but fascinating for those who enjoy biking. There are some trails already mapped out, such as the "Sensory Trail," the "Olive Tree Trail," and "The Badia Trail".

The first one starts from the Hermitage of San Lorenzo alla Montanina and winds through forests and ridges, with panoramic views of the Val di Chio and Castiglion Fiorentino.

The second one, instead, starts from the Cilone Equipped Park and winds through the mid-coast countryside among olive groves and vineyards.

The third starts from Poggio Fontanina, where we take the Amareti road (CAI558). These are mostly abandoned places but very picturesque because time seems to have stopped.

The Val di Chio, far from mass tourism, vehicular traffic, and confusion, is an ideal place to relax, play sports, and enjoy zero-mile food and wine, thanks to the many farms and typical products in the area.
