Fantasy enthusiasts will feel the thrill of excitement at the imposing beauty of the Montecchio Castle in Castiglion Fiorentino.

It's a real gem of Medieval beauty that has remained intact over the centuries, not only architecturally but also because of its imposing, sometimes surreal, and timeless atmosphere.

Its state of preservation makes it one of the most interesting castles in the Arezzo area. What strikes the eye is its 263-metre crenelated wall that defines its profile.

The tower, which rises about thirty meters, is even more extraordinary and makes the castle identifiable from many kilometers away.

The castle dominates the Val di Chiana, lying between Castiglion Fiorentino and Cortona.

Position that among the 10th and the 12th centuries placed it at the center of several battles between Arezzo and Florence, with the latter increasingly aiming to conquer it to consolidate its influence over the territory.

However, it did not become a Florentine stronghold until 1289, when the castle took on its current appearance following a series of reinforcement works.

Later, in the 14th century, it became the fiefdom of the feared mercenary captain John Hawkwood, the famous Giovanni Acuto immortalized by Paolo Uccello, in the imposing fresco in Santa Maria del Fiore in Florence.

Today, the castle of Montecchio Vesponi hosts concerts, literary events, and guided tours, which can be booked by contacting the "Associazione Incastro".
